Many of us have recognized the void of personal financial planning information provided to us growing up either at home or in school. The unwritten rule in most black families is that money is not to be discussed at the dinner table if at all. So we have to figure it out as we go. This puts us at a significant disadvantage compared to other cultures that realize the necessity of financial education in the home.
Driving to work a while ago it dawned on me that even at work we are discouraged from sharing financial information. Pay discussions are frowned upon. They’re personal. Private. Hush-hush. Occasionally folks would quietly discuss 401k choices but again it’s a private topic. And typically the people having those discussions weren’t black folks. It was at that moment that I realized the need for an online resource that would function as a warehouse of information for all topics related to black retirement. I searched for it and it just wasn’t there so I decided to build it myself. And here we are.
I plan on retiring in 14 years at 60 years old but if I can pull it off I’ll be done in 10. My fingers are crossed. My mother did it at 55. And she is my inspiration. She enjoys life after working and lives comfortably enjoying her grandchildren and travels a great deal. I ask her if she ever misses work and she just laughs and says, ‘you’ll see’.
